The Elizabethan Manor house in the banner is Littlecote Hall, in Wiltshire. It is considered haunted, associated with a horrible crime perpetrated in Elizabethan history. The Haunted Room, on the About page, was where the crime was carried out.

The first installment was published in October 1887, in the English Illustrated Magazine. The series was collected in book form in 1888, and remained in print until 1944. There are 214 illustrations in the book.
